The students’ social heritage is largely created before school age, shows research. But if pattern breakers are to be created at school, the teacher plays a decisive role, says a Professor of the Department of Sociology of a University.

The social, economic and cultural status of parents is more important for students’ mathematical results. This was the conclusion of the latest survey.

It is thoughtful that we are one of the countries that are relatively poor to break the negative social heritage. What does it mean that all children really have a chance here? Asked Minister of Education when he presented the survey in front of rolling cameras and journalists.

If there is one who breaks the social heritage at school, then it is the teacher. It is not the school’s ethos or resources or the educational style. It’s the individual teacher who does that, what research clearly shows is that actions that take place before the child starts school has a much greater impact on a child’s social mobility than school life.

Social studies ideas for preschoolers

development children in familyThe primary school may not make such a difference for students with negative social inheritance. Mother and father are by far the biggest determinant. Is there such a nuisance or environment? The results show that it is half of each. It turns out that in the pregnancy it is very important whether the mother is smoking and eating healthy. The better the parents’ education, the better the child will be, telling a survey where researchers allowed a tape recorder to record sound in several homes. At the end of the study, the researchers spoke the number of soft words. In highly educated homes there was a change of coffee, cooking and at the dining table said far more words than do in low-skilled homes.

Studies indicate that the amount of time the parents spend on stimulating the child, actually explains the whole difference that consists of parenting education. Children simply do better because they are better stimulated in home where you read, sing and point to the picture book.

Room for improvement

It is customary to say that 70 percent of the social heritage is due to the families, and 30 percent is due to the rest. What you have discovered is that it is largely the teacher who can later break the social heritage; the researchers do not know what the teacher does to help students break the social heritage. The research tradition is changing now, but it takes a long time for such new research to bring results that teachers can use in classrooms.

Study time breaks social heritage

pre-school developmentThe researchers agree that fewer students about a teacher have a small impact on the social heritage.

» The impact of small classes is greatest for the weakest students. But small classes work, it’s just a great expensive way to achieve improvements to the general academic level and the improvement of the social heritage. But there is of course a limit. 200 students in one class are probably not good and studies show that there is no evidence that it gives something to have less than 15 students in class.

» Drawing tests show that homework helps. When looking at a lottery attempt, it turns out that the longer you can get students from the weak home to do school things, the better they will be. It’s like running, the more you run, the better you run.
